Study Groups are small to mid-sized groups that meet regularly to work through a particular ACA Workbook (12 step Workbook, Traits Workbook, Loving Parent Guidebook, A New Hope). These private study groups, both in-person and online, allow intensive recovery work with a trusted group who shares experience, strength, and hope with each other. Read more

Q

Study groups may be used in place of going through a workbook with a sponsor. This is a common in the ACA “fellow traveler” model, in which peers provide recovery support.

ACA study groups can provide what the Big Red Book calls “indirect sponsorship.” In such settings, gradually many of us find it easier to begin to trust others and, thus, rely on the group conscience for support and guidance. Over time, members of the workgroup often form the foundation for a recovery support network … each a vital source of individual experience, strength, and hope.

Newly forming Study Groups are posted on the ACA WSO website while they are accepting members. However, most study groups close attendance after the first several meetings. This is what makes them unique from a regular ACA meeting where people may come and go. Closing the Study Group to additional people at a certain point helps promote an environment of safety and trust as group members begin to feel more comfortable with each other.

Closed study groups, like all ACA meetings, follow the ACA principles and The Twelve Traditions. Closed study groups are considered a supplement, and not a replacement, for regular ACA meeting attendance.

Once a study group is closed, the listing will be removed from the WSO website.

Newly forming Study Groups are posted on the ACA WSO website while they are accepting members. Typically, the study group closes to new members after the first few meetings, which is the last day to join the group will be displayed on the listing. This allows participants to work closely with the same people (fellow travelers) throughout the course of their study. That’s what makes study groups different from regular ACA meetings where people may come and go. Read more
